Trauma informed psychological therapy.
Relational by nature.
Welcoming new clients from July 2026
Kapwa comes from Filipino psychology, which recognises the self as
deeply connected to others.
Psychological healing doesn't happen in isolation.
Who we are, how we understand ourselves,
and what recovery means to us are
all shaped by the worlds we come from.
My therapeutic approach works at this space by
gently moving through what has become stuck,
and helping your nervous system find its way
back toward connection.
About
Maejoy Obach
Hi, I’m Maejoy. 👋 I’m the person you’ll be working with at Kapwa Psychology. Born and raised on Dharawal Country (Sydney) with Filipino heritage, I feel very lucky to have called the Coffs Coast home for the last 7 years.
I started this practice from a deep belief in people’s innate capacity to heal and to find their way back to themselves, regardless of what they’ve been through.
Most of my work as a psychologist has involved working closely with young people and families as they navigate life’s complexities. It’s a deep privilege to walk alongside people’s journeys as they navigate this wild and messy thing we call life.
If you’ve been thinking about reaching out, I’d love to hear from you.
Clinical Psychologist & EMDR Therapist
My Approach
I'm often described as warm, genuine, and easy to talk to. I'd say my approach is the same - relational, honest, and built around what actually matters to you.
-
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) Therapy is an evidence based therapy that works with how traumatic memories are stored in the body and mind. Rather than requiring you to talk through experiences in detail, EMDR works at the level of the nervous system by processing what has become stuck so it no longer carries the same weight in the present.
I offer both standard 50 minute and extended 80 minute EMDR sessions. The extended format allows for deeper processing within a single session.
-
Therapy here is relational at its core. The relationship between us - the quality of presence, attunement, and safety in the room - is not just the backdrop to the work. It is part of how healing happens.
This practice is built on the understanding that who you are cannot be separated from your world and your stories. Culture, identity, lived experience, and the systems that have shaped you are core to our work.
I work with people across diverse backgrounds, and with those navigating intersecting identities, intergenerational trauma, and experiences of marginalisation.
-
Trauma and distress live in both the mind and body. Drawing on embodied and somatic frameworks alongside other evidence based approaches, I draw attention to what the body is holding alongside the cognitive and relational dimensions of therapy.
This means bringing curiosity to physical sensation, one’s window of tolerance, and the felt sense of experience.
-
In the the initial consultation, I’ll learn about you and your story, how therapy might helpful, and what changes you might be hoping for. We'll have a sense of where we're heading and why, and I'll be transparent about that as we go.
We'll talk about whether EMDR or other approaches are likely to be useful, what a course of treatment might look like, and what I'd suggest as a starting point.
Therapy is always collaborative and guided by your preferences.
