For referrers

If you are a GP, allied health clinician, or community service considering a referral, here’s what you need to know.

Who I see

Young adults (16-30s) and adults presenting with complex trauma, eating disorders, or the intersection of both.

I work well with clients who often need more than a standard 10 session pathway, including those with complex or treatment resistant presentations, high functioning profiles with significant underlying distress, or cultural and identity factors that haven't been well held elsewhere.

Presentations that I regularly see include:

  • Complex & relational trauma

  • Childhood adversity

  • Anorexia nervosa

  • Atypical anorexia

  • Binge eating disorder

  • Disordered eating

  • Anxiety & chronic stress

  • Low self worth & shame

  • Depression, low mood and affective disorders

  • Cultural & identity presentations

  • Perinatal mental health

Eating Disorder Management Plans (EDMPs)

In addition to Mental Health Care Plans, Kapwa Psychology accepts Medicare referrals under the Eating Disorder Treatment Plan pathway. Clients with a valid EDMP are eligible for up to 40 rebatable sessions per year.

My primary framework for eating disorder presentations is CBT-E (Enhanced Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), which can be adapted for trauma comorbid presentations. Where trauma and eating concerns overlap, EMDR can be incorporated as an adjunct therapy in the later stages of eating disorder treatment.

If you have a patient you'd like to discuss before referring, feel free to email directly at admin@kapwapsychology.com.au.

Clinical approach

My primary modality is EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy, including extended 80 minute sessions and intensive programs for clients who meet criteria. I also draw on somatic and sensorimotor approaches, schema therapy, DBT, CBT, and CBT-E for eating disorder presentations.

Sessions are relational and culturally responsive. I work with the whole person, including the cultural, community, and relational context they carry, rather than the presenting diagnosis alone.

How to refer

Email referrals to admin@kapwapsychology.com.au

Please include:

  • A current Mental Health Care Plan or Eating Disorder Management Plan

  • Relevant clinical history, current medications, and any risk considerations

  • The client's email address (appointment communications are sent via email)

I aim to respond to all referrals within 2-3 business days. I'll confirm suitability before any booking is made, and will let you know if I'm unable to take the referral so you can follow up elsewhere.

If you're unsure whether a client is suitable, you're welcome to email with a brief outline before sending a formal referral.
